Cairoli and his Swedish love affair

As the 2009 FIM World Motocross Championships head to Sweden this weekend for round 11 of the series many are asking the question if Red Bull De Carli Yamaha rider Antonio Cairoli can once again dominate around the technical and rough sand circuit of Uddevalla?

With two wins in a row in the Grand Prix of Germany two weeks ago and Grand Prix of Latvia last weekend Cairoli  is on fire. With his previous form taken into consideration at the Uddevalla circuit it might be hard for his rivals to stop him from going for the hat trick.

Looking at the results from the last five Grand Prix's held at the Uddevalla circuit it is obvious that one man comes to Sweden with an advantage over his rivals. Cairoli has three victories at the circuit, with wins in 2005, 2007 and 2008 in the MX2 class. He also finished with 6th place in 2006 behind eventual winner David Philippaerts and a seventh place behind former Red Bull KTM rider Ben Townley in 2004 after Townley won his first ever Grand Prix.

Other riders who have had good results in Sweden are Philippaerts who has gone 19-3-1-4-3, while New Zealand’s Josh Coppins another of the Monster Energy Yamaha riders has finished with 8-1-3-5-10 in the last five years. Teka Suzuki rider Ken De Dycker has also shown a liking for the sandy circuit, finishing with 15-8-7-1-7, not as impressive as Cairoli, Philippaerts and Coppins, but at least consistent.

These are the only riders who have consistently been inside the top ten in Sweden, although Tanel Leok finished 12th in 2004, 10th in 2005, and third in 2007. Rui Goncalves has finished with 12-9-15-18-6 for his five years in Sweden, and many of the younger MX2 riders haven't really shown anything special, with MX2 series leader Marvin Musquin 10th last year and Frossard fifth overall in 2008.

In another interesting aspect five of the last eight winners of the Grand Prix of Sweden have gone 2-1 for victory, while the other three have gone 1-1, those being Coppins and Cairoli in 2005 and Stefan Everts in 2006.

With both MX1 and MX2 championships nicely in the hands of Cairoli and Musquin respectively it's going to be important for riders like Philippaerts, Nagl and Coppins to perform some type of magic to pull the red plate from the hands of the Italian. In the MX2 class Gautier Paulin and Rui Goncalves will also need some luck.

With the move by the courts to block Musquin from riding any other machine other than Honda it could put some interest into the weekends racing. Will Musquin be able to continue the run of form he sustained on the orange bikes, or will his rivals get extra motivation to shoot him down?

Whatever happens this weekend in Sweden you can be sure that the Swedish supporters will enjoy something special from the two times World MX2 Champion (Cairoli), his love affair with Uddevalla simply couldn’t ask for anything else.
